Biographical Note

Glenn "Jake" Lawlor lettered in basketball and football while a student at the University of Nevada, graduating as a member of the class of 1930. He was a member of the Delta Xi Chapter of Sigma Nu fraternity while at the University, and was pitcher for its baseball team in 1928, when they won the inter-fraternity baseball tournament. He was captain of the basketball team in 1929. He played baseball for the McGill team in 1928 and for the Fallon Town Club in 1932. He became the basketball coach at the Virginia City High School in the 1930s, then returned to the University in 1944 as baseball coach and head basketball coach. He also coached football and golf at the University, becoming Director of Athletics in April 1959. He served in that capacity until his retirement in 1970. He was an official timer for the 1960 Olympic Games. Governor Mike O'Callaghan proclaimed May 26, 1972 as Jake Lawlor Day in recognition of his years of service. He died in Reno on July 11, 1980.

Scope and Content

The scrapbook consists of certificates, game programs, letters from University of Nevada Presidents and other colleagues, memorabilia, newspaper clippings, playbills, family and career photographs, and telegrams. Included is a Delta Xi Chapter - Sigma Nu publication from May 1928, when Lawlor was a student at the University of Nevada. His 1960 Winter Olympics "Official" patch is accompanied by a newspaper story and photograph of his service as a timer for the games at Squaw Valley. Newspaper clippings and photographs include coverage of various Nevadans, including Rollan Melton and other members of the University's coaching staff.

The scrapbook was compiled by Erma Lawlor, wife of Jake Lawlor, and presented to him at his retirement from the University in May 1972. Items continued to be added to the scrapbook until 1993.
